Located just five miles from the U.S.–Mexico border in the heart of Brownsville, Texas, Homer Hanna High School is the first of six high schools in the Brownsville Independent School District and serves more than 1,800 students. Recognized as an academically rigorous, A-rated campus by the Texas Education Agency, Hanna offers exceptional academic, athletic, and fine arts programs where students excel at the regional, area, and state level.

The Golden Eagle Band program traces its roots to 1916 as part of the original Brownsville High School, beginning with just 22 members. In the 1930s, the program evolved from a small after-school drum and bugle corps into a full band, officially established in 1937.
Under the leadership of VanderCook alumni James R. Murphy in the 1940s, the band rose to state and national prominence, performing at the Mid-West National Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1950 and 1952, earning numerous UIL First Division ratings, and winning Best in Class at major festivals. In 1958, Robert Vezzetti became Director of Bands, guiding the program to win the TMEA AAAA Honor Band, international concert tours, and multiple national festival championships.

In 1974, Brownsville High School was renamed Hanna High School, and Arcadio “Art” Guajardo became head director. For forty years, he led the Golden Eagle Band to consistent UIL Sweepstakes awards, produced countless All-State musicians, and earned championships in Texas and across the nation. Known for his innovative drills and arrangements, Mr. Guajardo cemented the band’s reputation for excellence

Paul Flinchbaugh succeeded him in 1998, continuing the tradition with repeated UIL victories, appearances at area and state marching contests, and state honor band finalist placements. In 2006, Dennis Ewing became Head Director, leading the Golden Eagle Band to 10 appearances at the UIL State Marching Contest, multiple Honor Band finalist placements, and the premiere TMEA Spotlight Program designation in 2024.

Today, the Hanna High School Band enrolls over 200 students in grades 9–12 and offers a variety of ensembles, including the Golden Eagle Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Winterguard, and multiple chamber groups. Students benefit from rigorous performance opportunities such as UIL contests, solo and ensemble festivals, and spring recital nights.

From its humble beginnings to its celebrated present, the Hanna High School Golden Eagle Band continues to uphold its proud motto: “Always Imitated, Never Duplicated.”
