Murphy in the 1940s, the band rose to state and national prominence, performing at the Mid-West National Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1950 and 1952, earning numerous UIL First Division ratings, and winning Best in Class at major festivals. In 1958, Robert Vezzetti became Director of Bands, guiding the program to win the TMEA AAAA Honor Band, international concert tours, and multiple national festival championships.
In 1974, Brownsville High School was renamed Hanna High School, and Arcadio “Art” Guajardo became head director. For forty years, he led the Golden Eagle Band to consistent UIL Sweepstakes awards, produced countless All-State musicians, and earned championships in Texas and across the nation.
